How to Celebrate National Relaxation Day

Updated: Apr 4, 2021

Have you heard of National Relaxation Day?

It may not be as well-known as Mothers’ Day or Valentine’s Day, or even Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day (which is coming up in September, btw), but August 15th is a great day to take stock of your wellbeing and brush-up on your relaxation skills.

Here are 20 ways to chill during the most relaxing of holidays.

2020 has been a rough year. Now, more than ever, it’s important to notice and nurture your own mental health. The CDC is even posting mental health suggestions right alongside their physical health reminders:

"Coping with stress in a healthy way will make you, the people you care about, and your community stronger."

This is what makes National Relaxation Day so important this year. It’s a great reminder to pause, take a breath, and take care of ourselves.

August 15th falls on a Saturday this year, making it a bit easier for most adults to actually slow down and do as the title of the holiday suggests. Relax.

There are many activities or non-activities that could make up a great Relaxation Day:

· Take a nap

· Read a book

· Swim

· Take a walk

· Look at beautiful art

· Daydream

· Stretch

· Cook a fun meal

· Order food in, instead

· Watch a movie

· Chat with a friend

· Have drinks on the porch

· Toast marshmallows in the backyard

· Play a game

· Go hiking

· Color a picture

· Or paint one

· Lie on a blanket and watch the clouds

· Chill in the bath

Everyone has different ways to relax. One person’s relaxation could stress someone else out. The point is to think about what works for you, then indulge, guilt-free.

It’s easy to get caught up in deadlines, family needs, and endless to-do lists, but human brains require relaxation time just as much as food and sleep. It’s vital to keeping us healthy and happy.

It’s a good idea always to do something relaxing prior to making an important decision in your life. ~ Paulo Coelho

Relaxation is vital to human health, and you’re probably not getting enough. Take this Saturday to relax and rejuvenate. You deserve it.

Let us know in the comments how you like to relax. You never know what great ideas will pop up, or who you can inspire.
